Corrosion resistance
Despite the many benefits of working with magnesium, manufacturers of many consumer products shy away from it because it is so prone to corrosion. Hand-held electronics products such as mobile ‘phones, lap-tops and MP3 players can now be produced from magnesium treated using the Keronite process as this will provide magnesium with as much as 1000 hours of corrosion resistance in the extreme environment of a salt spray test. Keronite on magnesium has also been proven effective on magnesium eyewear, even in humid climates, despite the highly corrosive combination of sun cream, sweat and cosmetics.
Adhesion
In addition to this dense, protective layer, Keronite has a porous outer layer which provides an excellent adhesive base for subsequent finishing with a variety of topcoats. Using Keronite as a pre-treatment for paints and lacquers produces a decorative finish with unmatched scratch resistance on products such as hand tools, bicycle frames and binoculars.
The surface characteristics of Keronite provide an ideal key for impregnation with PTFE in non-stick aluminium applications. This was recognised by DuPont in 2002 when Keronite was given the Plunkett Award for the innovative use of Teflon®.
Inner surfaces and cavities
As an immersion process with outstanding throwing power, Keronite can be used to treat and protect the inner surfaces of even the most complex shapes.
