  Motorcycle

There are a number of motorcycle components – both aluminium and magnesium – that benefit from Keronite surface treatment technology:

Aluminium gaskets
Keronite is used as a thermal barrier, reducing heat flow from the block to the head for example.

Magnesium yokes

Magnesium frames coated with Keronite save weight and limit galvanic corrosion. This application is already in use by a Japanese customer.

Magnesium swing-arms

Keronite enables weight savings and limits galvanic corrosion.

Aluminium sprockets
and clutch baskets
Keronite improves the wear resistance of teeth. This application can be seen on European racing motorcycles.

Magnesium crankcase and brake callipers

Keronite enables weight savings and gives greater protection against wear and galvanic corrosion.

Magnesium timing chain cover

Cast magnesium AZ91D is used for light weight and Keronite provides corrosion protection of waterways. This is already in use by a Japanese customer.

Magnesium pistons

Keronite prevents skirt wear and pin-hole wear. This application is under investigation by a Japanese customer.

Aluminium piston crown
The performance of aluminium pistons is limited by detonation (knock). Keronite surfaces are resistant to detonation damage, allow higher specific power and leaner burn, as well as reducing the temperature of the crown. This part has been in series production at Keronite in Indianapolis since 2005.

Aluminium piston top ring groove
With a surface hardness of approximately 1200 HV, Keronite reduces wear in the top ring groove by a factor of 10 over the lifetime of the engine. This means there is approximately five times less system wear than there is with hard anodising. Reduced wear means lower emissions and blow-by., and it also enables smaller land height and hence a reduction in unburned HC emissions.

Aluminium brake rotors

Keronite can be used as a primary friction material for increased wear resistance.

All magnesium engine block (open deck configuration)

Keronite prevents corrosion in the water jacket and may be also be used as the cylinder liner. This application is being researched by more than one customer.

Magnesium wheels
Keronite enables a reduction in weight and gives excellent paint adhesion and protection against galvanic corrosion.
